Apple just released the latest version of i0S, and with it comes a handful of exciting new features. Added security features like spyware prevention, password replacement, and help against domestic abuse are just a few new tools you can expect from i0S 16. Here’s everything you should know about the latest update.
Safety Check
A new tool called Safety Check is to help those experiencing or at risk for domestic abuse. This centralized dashboard simplifies resetting passwords, and privacy settings, revoking location access, and auditing data sharing. Being able to reset these at a glance could be lifesaving. Resetting an Apple ID password with Safety Check will eliminate any stalkerware installed on this phone.
More privacy features
Lockdown Mode is not something that most people will need, but it’s still important to learn. Enabling Lockdown Mode switches off features abused by spyware, like limiting who can contact you, blocking email attachments, disabling link previews in messages, disabling certain web features like fonts and just-in-time compilers, disabling shared photos, and more.
The ability to cut off access to data-sharing means someone can no longer monitor that phone. Note that that person will be alerted when access is cut off. A user of this feature may want to speak with a domestic abuse counselor before taking action.
Less interruptive security updates
i0S can now install security updates without doing a full update every time. While this little feature may not seem like a big deal, people who hate getting notifications will be thankful for this. These critical security updates will be pushed through automatically, keeping everyone safe.
Control your clipboard
In i0S 16, you are notified whenever an app grabs information from the clipboard. You can allow or deny access every time that happens. Unfortunately, you will have to do this every time this notification pops up, as it’s not something you can select in the Settings app.
A passwordless future
If you’re one of those people who can’t remember a password ever or are constantly resetting passwords, this one is for you. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are now working on Passkeys. With this feature, your device becomes a security key. Instead of logging into various platforms with passwords, you’ll use your phone to authenticate your identity.
i0S 16 is the first platform to release this feature, although few sites are currently ready to support it. It’s great that it will be ready when these sites catch up. Gone will be the days of people trying to steal passwords and get banking information. That day can’t come soon enough.
